The Summit County region was created as one of the original 17 counties in the Colorado Territory in 1861. The county line then ran from the Continental Divide to the Utah line, and from Fremont and Hoosier Passes to the Wyoming line. Six counties were later created from the early Summit County area: Grand, Routt, Eagle, Garfield, Moffat, and Rio Blanco. Today, Summit County is bordered by neighboring counties Clear Creek, Grand, Park, Lake, and Eagle. The first time Summit County became well-known around the world was in 1859, when prospectors found gold and silver in the hills around it. During the high country trapper era, from 1810-1840, trappers attempted to keep the glittering mountain ranges a secret.
